Before and After: A Scandi – Inspired Exterior Makeover In The Suburbs

This quiet suburban transitional contemporary home was built in 1990, just brushing up against the late ’80s styles I usually write about. But the transformation here made me stop, look twice, and then look again.

This Scandi-inspired exterior makeover is a smart, deliberate reinvention—grounded in restraint but rich in intent.

With its sharp rooflines, pale brick, and black-trimmed windows, the home now carries a distinctly Scandi-inspired mood—cool, clean, and refreshingly simple.

Scandi – Inspired Exterior Makeover With Modern Curb Appeal

In updates on Modern Paper Houses, we’ve seen how natural wood cladding and two-tone paint can elevate the forms of 70s and 80s contemporary homes. But this one did something different. It took a 90s transitional/contemporary with an over-designed façade—complete with awkward bump-out windows and clapboard siding—and stripped it down in the smartest way. The original window structures replaced with large, uninterrupted panes of glass, allowing the house to morph into a Scandi-inspired form that feels calm and composed. There’s a quiet confidence here, rooted in a strong and deliberate vision. It’s as if the home were broken down into its most simplistic shapes—almost childlike in its honesty. That kind of clarity is rare. And it’s exactly what excites me about Modern Paper Houses: the possibility to rethink, refine, and reinvent what these homes can become. Well Done.

Rethinking What a Scandi Home Can Be

When we think about updating 70s and 80s contemporary homes, the instinct is usually to lean into their modern or postmodern roots. Scandi style wouldn’t have been the first thing I’d pull from the playbook — but it’s now officially in the toolkit. This makeover confirmed my philosophy that the dated exteriors I pass every day may have the bones for something truly special. It expanded my sense of what’s possible — you just have to be open to seeing it differently

Are You Ready For This? I Wasn’t

Here’s a quick interior photo tease of the same home. Let’s just say—the interiors offer a sharpened interpretation of Scandi-inspired style that beautifully compliments the streamlined exterior. I’ll be featuring the full tour in an upcoming post, but for now… here’s your first glimpse.
